Haug London Haus owners Siobhan and Philipp Haug

“There is a huge amount of evolution that happens when entering competitions. You get better every year. So even when you still haven`t won, the progression is so strong.”

I`ve always wondered why people are taking up all that effort – time, money, and energy – to enter competitions when there is so little chance to actually win. Of course, when you have won it was worth it – but what if you never win? What hairdresser Siobhan Haug told me in the interview with her and her husband was most eye-opening to me: Siobhan and her husband Philipp have entered competitions often and they both did get titles eventually – but there were many years when they didn`t win. Having won awards like ‘London Hairdresser of the Year’ and ‘British Colour Technician of the Year` is of course great for them in a lot of ways and a huge achievement.

Competing vs Progress

But there`s one aspect that is often overlooked: even without winning the award entering competitions can be rewarding itself. “There is a huge amount of evolution that happens when doing something like that. You get better every year”, says Siobhan. “So even when you still haven`t won, the progression is so strong, you become such a stronger hairdresser in that area. So, I think it`s worth it just from that perspective alone.” What a great insight! It`s not just about the title but it`s about the process and the learning experience. Now, the focus is not so much on competing but more on the joy of growing in your profession. And also: you then can`t lose – by entering and stretching yourself as a professional, by growing out of your comfort zone you have won already.

Back to Siobhan and Philipp: they opened their first own hair salon in Central London in December 2022. In the interview, we not only talk about winning competitions, but they also tell us about their personal concept for business success.

Aber was, wenn du einfach nie was gewinnst?

Konkurrenz vs Entwicklung
